BPA in Food Packaging

A few months ago I posted a comment on “7 foods to avoid” and within this was a comment on BPA ( The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.)

A newspaper in Sweden has conducted some research on this:-

“Svenska Dagbladet had four of the editors eat canned food during two days. The level of the hormone disruptor Bisphenol in their urine increased by several thousand percent. One of the reporters had the highest level ever measured in Sweden. It is amazing that the levels increased so much, this shows that canned products are a very important source of exposure to bisphenol A. Bisphenol A may cause changes in hormone levels, menstrual cycle irregularities, delays in reproductive development, and other reproductive problems.

According to the previous sample, people in Sweden are normally around three nanograms of BPA per milliliter of urine. One of the reporters had 86 nanograms for canned food diet.

Bisphenol A is a hormone disrupting substance in Sweden recently banned in packaging aimed at children. But any action against tins for adults has not been taken.

Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet carried out its experiments because of the suspicion that the epoxy resin in tin cans leak BPA into the food.

Reporters’ diet consisted for example of canned ravioli, ice cream condensed milk cans and mikrat coffee in the plastic cup. Exactly what food has contributed to bisphenol increase is not known.”

Look for glass jars of passata if you are concerned about this or use the plastic snap – pots of beans etc.

Dee’s Tofu Crushed Olive, Potato and Leek Bake

16 Jun Dee's Tofu Crushed Olive, Potato and Leek Bake

This vegan bake is really tasty and super easy to make.  It is like  a traditional potato gratin but without all the dairy and fat.

Ingredients:- serves 4

2 Large Leeks

5 waxy potatoes

handful of green olives ( I used Manzanilla/Spanish olives)

100g of firm tofu

Salt & Pepper

Low Salt Vegetable Stock


Slice the leeks and potatoes really thinly.  Crush the olives and tofu. Mix altogether into a casserole dish and mix one stock cube with 2L of water.  Season with salt and pepper. Cook in the oven at 180 for 30 mins covered and for an hour uncovered, until most of the water has been absorbed and the top layer goes slightly crunchy.

This really is so easy. Take 2 Tortilla wraps and “stick” together with some tomato puree. On top spread more tomato puree with the back of a spoon, add some sliced low-fat mozzarella cheese, some chopped up sun-dried tomatoes, some shallots or thinly sliced onion, sprinkle of sweetcorn and some fresh rocket leaves (rocket is really easy to grow in a pot in a balcony or garden). A tasty, healthy evening snack without the calories or fat (use a gluten-free wrap or vegan cheese for special diets)
